I love a book that I can't put down. This was fun, charming, and witty. Most of the book takes place in Goode's Department Store in downtown Sydney, Australia. Set in the late 50's, the women all wear black dresses (frocks as they are called) on the selling floor, hence the name of the book. Lisa, the main character, has just finished her high school exams and is awaiting her next step in life. In the meantime, she takes a job on the frock floor of Goode's. As an only child, she has lead a slightly sheltered life, and here she meets Patty, Magda, and Fay who open her eyes to a little of what the world beholds.
The characters are relatable, and it is a delight to be a part of their world for a few hours. It is the perfect book to settle in with on a winter afternoon.
